About PSI
Preservation Systems Inc. (PSI) is a seed-funded food technology company commercializing Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and vacuum systems that meaningfully extend fresh food shelf life. Our portfolio includes consumer devices (MiniMAP), commercial equipment (MAPStation with FreshPrep), disposable containers (Freshware), and retrofit lids (STOR Tops). We are at a critical point with a consumer product launch, contracted B2B customers, and major brand partnership opportunities — your fingerprints will be on our success.
The Role
We're hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to work directly under our VP of Engineering as the engineering team's first dedicated technical hire. This is a sleeves-rolled-up, prototype-in-hand, test-data-on-your-desk kind of role. You'll be doing real engineering every day: designing components, running tests, iterating on seal systems, reviewing supplier drawings, and solving problems across our full product portfolio. You'll be on calls with international suppliers, reviewing tooling samples, and pushing back on drawings that aren't right.
The right person is early enough in their career to be genuinely hungry to learn and humble enough to know how much they don't know, but experienced enough to take a problem from "we need to figure this out" to "here's what the data says" without hand-holding. Engineering is a lifelong craft. We want someone who believes that and acts like it.
What You'll Own
Hands-On Engineering Component and subsystem design for consumer and commercial products. Tolerance analysis, material selection, prototyping, and testing. Seal system development and validation across container lines. Drawing packages and revision control.
Testing and Validation Design and execute test protocols for leak testing, gas flushing, vacuum performance, and seal integrity. Collect, organize, and present test data that drives decisions. Support DFMEA and design review processes.
Manufacturing Support Work directly with domestic and international manufacturing partners on DFM reviews, first article inspections, and tooling validation. Travel to supplier facilities as needed. Collaborate with operations on production readiness.
Qualifications
3–8 years of hands-on mechanical product development experience with supplier-facing responsibilities
1+ year working with injection molding, silicone, or overmolded components
Has personally built and tested physical prototypes, not just CAD models
SolidWorks proficiency (PDM experience is a plus)
Comfortable with GD&T and reading/creating engineering drawings
Familiarity with test equipment: calipers, force gauges, pressure/vacuum instrumentation
Direct experience working with suppliers on tooling, first articles, or production issues — international supplier experience (especially Asia) is strongly preferred
Nice to Have
Food contact products or packaging experience
Seal system design (gaskets, O-rings, silicone overmolding)
Experience with Asian contract manufacturers
Startup or small-team environment experience
Who You Are
Humble and self-aware
Relentlessly thorough
Builds things, not slide decks
Asks why until they understand
Takes ownership without being asked
A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is valued, but we care more about what you've actually built and how you think. If you've held parts you designed in your hands, if you've stayed late to rerun a test because the data didn't make sense, and if you want to grow into a career-defining engineering role at a company where your work ships to real customers, we want to talk to you.
